How to Set Up Business Email on Android: IMAP and Exchange

This guide is for anyone who wants to read work email on an Android phone or tablet. We'll cover both ways to connect — IMAP and Exchange ActiveSync — in the Gmail app and built-in mail apps, and show how to get your work calendar and contacts on the phone too.

IMAP or Exchange ActiveSync?

MethodWhat syncsPros and cons
Exchange ActiveSyncMail, calendar, contactsEverything in one account, with push notifications for new mail. Requires an app that supports Exchange.
IMAP + SMTPMail onlyWorks in any mail app. Calendar and contacts need separate setup.

If you need calendar and contacts, go with Exchange ActiveSync. If you only need email, either method works. For a detailed comparison of the protocols, see IMAP, POP3, and SMTP.

Connection settings

SettingValue
Email address and usernameYour full address, such as name@example.uz
PasswordYour mailbox password
Exchange ActiveSync servermail.mcmail.uz
Incoming mail (IMAP)mail.mcmail.uz, port 993, SSL/TLS
Incoming mail (POP3, if needed)mail.mcmail.uz, port 995, SSL/TLS
Outgoing mail (SMTP)mail.mcmail.uz, port 465, SSL/TLS (or 587 with STARTTLS)

If your administrator has turned on two-factor authentication, check with support how to connect a mail app.

Gmail app: IMAP

The Gmail app comes preinstalled on almost every Android device, and it works with non-Google mailboxes too. Menu labels may vary slightly between versions.

  1. Open Gmail, tap your profile picture in the top-right corner, and choose Add another account.
  2. Select Other.
  3. Enter your full email address and tap Manual setup.
  4. Choose Personal (IMAP) as the account type.
  5. Enter your password.
  6. Incoming server settings: username is your full address, server mail.mcmail.uz, port 993, security type SSL/TLS.
  7. Outgoing server settings: turn on Require sign-in, use the same username and password, server mail.mcmail.uz, port 465, security type SSL/TLS.
  8. Pick a sync frequency, enter the name recipients will see, and finish setup.

If the app asks whether to allow an insecure connection or accept a certificate, say no. Recheck the server name and security type instead.

Gmail app: Exchange

  1. In Gmail, tap your profile picture > Add another account > Exchange and Office 365.
  2. Enter your full email address and tap Manual setup.
  3. Enter your password.
  4. In the server settings, use your full email address for the domain and username (if there's a single "Domain\Username" field, enter just your address). Set the server to mail.mcmail.uz. Leave the port and security type at their defaults (usually 443 and SSL/TLS).
  5. The app may warn that the server will remotely manage some device security features, such as requiring a screen lock. This is a standard part of ActiveSync — accept it to continue.
  6. In the account settings, make sure syncing is on for email, calendar, and contacts.

Your work calendar will then appear in Google Calendar or your phone maker's calendar app, and contacts will show up in Contacts.

Samsung Email and other apps

Samsung Email, the built-in app on Samsung devices, supports both IMAP and Exchange ActiveSync. The flow is the same:

  1. Open the app and add a new account (it will prompt you on first launch).
  2. Enter your address and password, then choose Manual setup.
  3. Pick the account type: IMAP account or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
  4. Enter the settings from the table above.

Mail apps from other manufacturers (Xiaomi, Huawei, and others) work similarly: when adding an account, look for Other or Manual setup.

Calendar and contacts without Exchange

If you connected mail over IMAP and don't want to use Exchange, you can sync calendar and contacts with CalDAV and CardDAV. Android doesn't support these protocols out of the box, so you'll need a third-party sync app such as DAVx⁵. It adds your calendars and address books to the system Calendar and Contacts apps.

You'll need your full address, password, and the CalDAV/CardDAV server address. The exact address is shown in the calendar and address book settings in SOGo webmail, or you can ask support for it.

Common errors

  • "Incorrect username or password." The username must be your full address. Check your password by signing in to webmail at https://mail.mcmail.uz.
  • Mail comes in but won't go out. Sign-in isn't enabled for the outgoing server, or the port and security type are wrong.
  • New mail shows up late. With IMAP, the app checks for mail on a schedule. Shorten the sync interval or use Exchange ActiveSync with push. Also check that battery saver isn't restricting the mail app in the background.
  • Sign-in stopped working after several attempts. The server temporarily blocks repeated password guessing. Wait a while and enter your password carefully.
  • No calendar after adding Exchange. Make sure calendar sync is turned on in Android's account settings (Settings > Accounts, or Users & accounts on some devices).

If you also use an iPhone or Mac, see our guide to setting up Apple devices. If you can't get the mailbox connected, message @mycloudsupport with your phone model, the app you're using, and the error text.
